Here’s a simple framework to work out how many links you need to rank for any keyword:

Remember, there are lots of reasons websites are ranking higher than others, outside of links to the page, get the fundamentals right first:
Overall domain authority (foundation links, real world promotion, social)
Onsite optimisation
Internal links

And then there are elements within the links, that are harder to quantify, but can make a lot of difference like:
Relevancy of websites linking
Position of the link
Number of outgoing links on the page
Hierarchical position of the linking page
Anchor text used to link

Also - remember ranking for a keyword can also be an unhealthy way of running an SEO campaign if done in isolation.

Kinda like training your left bicep and nothing else.
