I did nothing for 30 days. My agency made more than ever.

Earlier this year I decided to step away more from the day to day. Not a holiday or sabbatical. Just 'space'.

No getting involved in Google messages. No jumping on meetings where I'm not needed. No jumping in on department decisions and no firefighting.

And my agency, fatjoe, didn’t stall. Nothing bad happened... Problems got solved and innovation still happened.

We grew more than ever.

Revenue and orders up. Fewer bottlenecks and faster delivery. Seamless decision making with the departments doing what they do best.

That month taught me more than any growth hack. When you stop getting so involved, you finally see whether you’ve built a business or a dependency.

I knew we had the systems and the people. We had the brand momentum. What we lacked was the founder getting out of the way.

I'm still not perfect at this, and its a process, but after 13 years I think I'm finally getting the hang of it 😂

We're all trying to build businesses that work without us, but we rarely truly step out the way.

As founders, our leverage is the vision and direction, not getting involved in department decisions. The more we get out of the day to day, the more effective we can be with the bigger picture.

If you struggle with getting out the way, try a 30 day 'space' challenge, and see what happens.
